iPhone Security: A text message can crash any iPhone it’s sent to

iPhone 6 Security Issue

There has been a newly discovered bug going around where a simple text message sent to any iPhone will cause it to crash and then reboot.

The text message can be sent from any mobile device like an Android phone, an iPhone, BlackBerry or Windows Phone. The message that gets sent around can be found easily like on Reddit or even on Twitter where it get’s sent around to annoy other users.

This only seems to work in the following situations:

  • When your phone is locked
  • It only seems to work if your phone is not on safe mode
  • On a jailbroken phone it shoots you into safe mode…could means that it might be related to a Springboard vulnerability
  • It doesn’t work if the person you are sending is looking at your texts, they can be anywhere else on their iPhone

The problem seems to be that it is due to how the banner notifications process the Unicode text. The banner briefly attempts to present the incoming text and then “gives up” thus the crash.

So have fun with that!

Just a little bit of useless information.
